On January 4, 2007, District of Columbia Mayor Adrian M. Fenty unveiled his plan to provide the city’s children with hope and opportunity through an education reform initiative. The plan would ensure rational, streamlined education policy by making the mayor accountable and responsible for managing DC Public Schools. The DC Council gave
final approval to the Mayor’s initiative April 19, 2007. However, the Mayor does not have legal authority over the schools until the bill is approved by the US Congress. In the meantime, Mayor Fenty has developed a
transition plan* to prepare for an orderly transfer.
Mayor Fenty will hold Education Town Halls in every ward to capture vital input and feedback from parents, teachers and students. Information gathered during these meetings will be incorporated in the city’s final strategy and education plan for DC Public Schools. Find
dates and locations of upcoming town hall meetings.
